What is a Talent?

An oft-used word, “talent” is usually synonymous with qualities of “intelligence” or “athleticism” to many of us. In today’s fast-paced, digital society that has become dominated by ways of elevating values of impulse and instant gratification, it’s in our nature to want to know what precisely differentiates a world-class athlete, a chess grandmaster, or anyone else at the pinnacle of their field.

To us, the answer is simple. Talent is immeasurable.

The name, “Talent 10” is derived from the Parable of Talents - the simple story of a man going on a journey. He gives portions of his estate - ‘talents’ - to three servants, each who make their own decisions about what to do with it, some of these decisions displeasing the man more than the others.

A powerful framework for thinking about how we approach work, success, and wealth, the Parable of Talents teaches us to use our abilities, our gifts, our “talents” to change the world we live in for the better, without reservation and without fear of taking risks.

Stewardship is at the core of Talent 10, and we are building on it each day, asking the question, what are we doing now with what we’ve got? For us, business is the way we can give back.

History

What do an independent film company, a provider of industrial air conditioning, and a gaming studio have in common? They all got their start with the backing of Talent 10.

From coal mining to the silver screen and all things in between, Talent 10 does venture capital like no one else.

It was the gnawing restlessness of knowing that your true home is calling that lead to so many of the Talent 10 team joining its ranks. In fact, that exact feeling is what lead to Wayne Fitzjohn forgoing status and reward after realising the highest successes in his spheres, to seek out the unimaginable.

In 2012, he founded Talent 10 along with Sipho Nkosi, Mxolisi Mgojo and Dr Humphrey Mathe as a home for his relentless pursuit of opportunities that buck convention to change the world.

Over the last 20 years, we have advised and built our own companies, brick by brick, reinventing the global ecosystem for startups and investors. Already boasting in excess of 10 successful capital raises, including R100-million tech startup, IoT.nxt, we have an innate understanding of the Entrepreneur. The way we support investee companies stands out from the crowd. How? Our support takes many forms – financial, strategic, managerial, sales and marketing, access to diverse commercial networks and deal-making expertise. We don't believe in being ‘boxed in’, nor do we believe in boxing our companies into just one, narrow idea of entrepreneurship.
